Maquettes for the de Marco, Mintoff and Tabone monuments chosen
Monuments to be built next year to commemorate a series of national anniversaries.
The three maquettes for the monuments of former presidents Guido de Marco and Censu Tabone and former prime minister Dom Mintoff have been chosen.
The Office of the Prime Minister said that 16 maquettes had been submitted to the public call made through Heritage Malta, under the patronage of the OPM in collaboration with the Transport Ministry and the Foundation for National Celebrations.
A jury composed of architects, artists, cultural people, Heritage Malta officials and OPM officials chose the three maquettes. The choice was made following consultation with the de Marco, Tabone and Mintoff families.
The selected maquette of Guido de Marco is the work of Aaron Camilleri Cauchi, while did the Dom Mintoff maquette and the Censu Tabone maquette were created by Alfred Camilleri Cauchi.
While the monument honouring de Marco will be placed in front of the law courts, Mintoff's monument will be at Castille's Square. Tabone's monument will be in St Julian's.
The three personalities, the OPM said, were protagonists in the political and social changes of the country. The monuments will be put up next year as Malta would be celebrating 50 years since its Independence, 40 years since becoming a Republic, 35 years since Freedom Day and 10 years since its accessions to the European Union.
