Peter Davies appointed new Air Malta CEO with €500,000 salary package

UPDATED | As revealed by MaltaToday this week, Air Malta’s new CEO is Peter Davies.

Peter Davies has joined Malta’s national airline following his position as managing director of Air Southwest in the UK.

The news was officially confirmed today after MaltaToday first broke the news this week that Davies had been head-hunted to take over the beleaguered airline as it faces a drastic restructuring programme.

Senior Air Malta sources have said that the package accepted by Davies reaches €500,000 yearly.

A qualified pilot, Peter Davies has also held operational and marketing positions in Qantas and as Managing Director at XP Express Systems, a subsidiary of KLM.

Davies has over 35 years’ experience in the aviation industry, both in passenger and express cargo operations and has served as CEO at SN Brussels Airlines, which he successfully launched as Sabena's successor.

During his term, Davies restored the airline’s stability after two years of operation by rationalizing the airline’s network and internal processes and focusing on yield management on European and African routes.

Peter Davies also oversaw the restructuring of BWIA into Caribbean Airlines. His overall experience covers various aspects of global transportation and express logistics including senior Board positions in DHL based in Europe and the US.

This is an outrageous insult to the Maltese workers. Given the current economic scenario giving these salaries out hurts the maltese worker directly! This goverment is being very selfish and unkind to all workers. There are workers who can barely make ends meet and have not got a proper pay increase and at this time we have to get a foreign expert and pay him over half a million euros salary!!!

ara vera tal misthija dan il gvern. ghandek qalb gonzi tkecci dawn inies biex lahaqt wiehed li il paga tijaw tiswa dqas 300 ruh. vera bustard

@-The Alchemist From what I have read, Dr Fenech is basing himself on a report by Ernst & Young. Malta has to prove to the EU that the airline can be made profitable. The report presumably works out logically and mathematically how that could be done – on paper. The Opposition and some employees have contested the accuracy of parts of the report. If the solution were so clear cut, I do not think Government would have recruited a man with 35 years’ experience (whatever the salary package) to simply execute an accountants’ (or management consultants’) report. I am confiding that a professional such as Mr Davies will first verify the accuracy of the report and then do his utmost, as CEO, to work in the interests of all stakeholders – and that includes the purportedly unnecessary employees. Maybe I am wishful thinker but we should give this gentleman a chance now that that he has been recruited.

Din mi xejn hlief nasba tal gvern mall haddiema. Nispera li l'Unions kollha joqghoqu attenti sabiex il haddiema jiehdu li haqqhom. Ha juzaw lill dan il barrani biex inehhu kemm hemm bzonn haddiema sabiex hadd m'ikun jista jippunta lejn il Maltin. Wara li jehilsu Air Malta mill majorranza tal haddiema dan il bniedem jitlaq lura minn fejn gie.

@-reb Despite the exorbitant pay package the workers will, unfortunately, still get the axe. Dr Tonio Fenech has been saying this all along.
avatar
Mr Navarro Your calculation (500k/15k) gives 30 not 300 workers. We need to see what market rates are for a CEO of an airline the size of Air Malta. I would not mind paying Mr Davies this if he is able to save the airline and the remaining workers. More so, if he is able to avoid some of the proposed redundancies.
avatar
Actually he was going to ask for a much smaller salary package but then someone drew his attention that the PM has recently gave himself and his ministers a weekly rise of €600 (then reduced to €500). And he said to himself "What the heck, if they are so greedy and insensitive why can't I be like them, after all I am not a 'cuc' malti like them!"
avatar
Despite the astronomical GROSS pay packet (apart from the allowances, bonuses, etc) that this guy is going to earn from our own taxes...I will be extremely delighted if Tonio Fenech will declare the Key Performance Indicators and Objectives that Mr Davies is contracted to achieve on a yearly basis. What measures are there in his contract if these are not achieved???

Kaziba, wahda wara l-ohra. Ma jafux x'inhuma jaghmlu imma ftakru, li fl-ahhar :"We have to pick up the pieces'! Pozi u tlellix kemm tridt, u meta tigi ghas 'SI' u in-NO" immorru lura bhal Granc!

we are assured about the outcome of airmalta a deja vu . At the shipyards the same happened we paid millions to foreign managment just to achieve the government goals that is no goverrnment entities. Well this is PN policy so it is good that finally after 30 years people get to know their political principles and for who they voted for these last 30 years.
avatar
So AirMalta has another half a million fixed cost.... would have been more sensible to link pay to profitable outcome of AirMalta's 'restructuring'.....but alas I am another cuc Malti!

Headline should read 'ANOTHER FOREIGN SUCKLING ENGAGED TO NURSE ON AIR MALTA' Valletta Malta by our correspondent Maltese Cuc. The Maltese government in it's attempt to persuade the EU for government bail outs to be bestowed on Air Malta has turned it's focus on British nationals to salvage the diving airline. Between the Maltese government administration and the accounting firm that has been appointed as trustee in administration to see the new restructuring of a demoralised Air Malta, a decision has been reached that no Maltese national should be exposed to such a tantamount underttaking. Since the bright and bold Minister Tonio Fenech declared publicly that NO MALTESE FOOLS need apply for the CEO position, his Bugs Bunny mentality has resorted to bring in foreign sucklings to lead in the milking of this Maltese corporate cow. Maltese tax payers and concerned citizens has become extremely proud that EU membership for this small island has meant to handing over the corporate stucture of its main industries to foreigners that are able to collect very accomodating salaries and benefits, yet deliver devastating results. The main aim of the Bugs Bunny mentality is to eliminate any Maltese Fools from getting involved in the operations of this airline has finally been reached.

Now I understand why 600 workers have to be sacked...an employee earns an average of 15,000 Euro a year..so the CEO wage is going to be 500,000 Euro...the equivalent of 300 workers wage at AirMalta...so the deputy CEO would get the other half. Good move Tonio!!! We must concentrate of the PUDINI that the government is doing from our taxes and not on the Divorce issue!
avatar
LET US SEE NOW IF MR DAVIES IS STILL AROUND ELECTION TIME IF HE WOULD CONCEDE TO GIVE 10 EUROS TICKETS TO SOME 3000 BLUE EXPATRIATES TO TRAVEL TO MALTA TO KEEP GONZIPN IN GOVERNMENT. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT NOTWITHSTANDING THAT HE IS NO CUC, THAT IS BECAUSE HE IS NOT MALTESE, HE WOULD HAVE TO GIVE IN TO GONZIPN AND ADDIO AIR MALTA.

U zgur li mhux cuc...tafu li dan ser ikollu paga ta madwar NOFS MILJUN EURO fis sena? Iva kif il qahba nistaw inkomplu sejrin hekk? Dan il gvern ilu li tilef rasu u ahna bqajna inciccu beqqi u ma naghamlu xejn. So airmalta is being stated that it needs more money to become feasible again, notwithstanding the E52M that the EU has already conceded, and this government is now going to be spending such a large amount on just one person? What the fuck? CRAZY LOT!!!!!!
avatar
dan mhux cuc tafux, ha jiehu nofs miljun euro fis sena ghal tlett snin. Ahleb Guz.

I am sure that this person is being paid astronomically. This will add to the costs of the airline. To increase the costs is one way to kill a company. Value for money: If we are paying for his services, we expect that this kind of agreement includes the achievements. If his service is not as expected, I hope it is written in black and white what he will have to pay as professional indemnity.

Ghax dawn it-tip ta nies ghandhom habta kif meta tmur xi haga tajba kien minhabba fihom u meta jmur kollox hazin mhux tort taghhom.

Mr. Davies's priorities should be to stop all the freebies that all politicians and workers and their families take at the expense of the airline and subsequently of all travelers. Air Malta was always profitable and the culprits are the nationalist ministers who have heaped on workers to win their cursed elections. The new CEO like his predecessor will not take any bull from any cuc ta ministru. This is probably the reason why he took off. And Mr. Davies.... All due respect to you but there was never any need for you. All that was needed is to take off all the cream everyone has been scooping from Airmalta and curt the waste and make everyone pay . Not have a plane ferry 4 people only to Brussels and come back empty.. Who footed this bill?? The nationalist government will have it on their conscience that they killed the airline. And I wouldnt put it past them that it was all intentional.

Dead wood will be cleared. Whether top or from bottom. Make no mistake. Even the rotting roots.

His first job should be to clear out all the deadbeat political appointees from the management (sic).

The Man has just started and you are all coming to the wrong negative conclusions. Does not matter if he is old or young so long he has the guts to push through the corrective medicine down Air Malta's gullet. Mentality has to change and the Airline run on a commercial basis. It should not be made to carry any 'Social baggage' just run like other Airlines to generate profits. No more intrusion from anyone pulling the Airline in different directions which has cost Air Malta dearly. I hope Mr. Davies succeeds in his job. It's Air Malta last chance.

Does this mean that the Air Malta employees will have to wait for the new CEO to update himself on the situation before action starts being taken?
