In the Press: PL victory in EP elections

Stories from today's national press

The MEP election results dominate every newspaper in today's review. After the nation went to the polls last Saturday, counting began the following day and continues on today. The PL has won a better-than-expected majority, with Alfred Sant being the first candidate to be elected with first count votes, garnering close to 50,000 votes.

PN frontrunner Roberta Metsola has 32,359 votes, a 26,000 increase when compared to her 2009 result in a casual election.

AD chairman Arnold Cassola and Partit ta' L-Ajkla's Nazzarenu Bonnici both commented to this newspaper on the election results. Cassola said that whether he remains with AD will be determined in the party's AGM in October while Bonnici called for PN's Simon Busuttil to step down in the wake of a significant defeat. He himself was confident that he would gain at least 1,000 votes, an improvement from the 80 he won in the general elections.
