The Ornis Committee, which met on Tuesday, has recommended a derogation from the EU Birds Directive, allowing a trapping season in Autumn. Trappers would be able to trap a total of over 26,000 individual birds of seven species - goldfinch, siskin, serin, chaffinch, greenfinch, hawfinch and linnet - over two months.

This newspaper has called the government's suspension of a controversial legal notice proof that the Opposition had reason to oppose it back in April, when it was first presented. The legal notice would give the minister for education access to student data, including ID numbers and grades, without the need for consent.

An ex-Malta Drydocks worker was awarded further monetary compensation by a court yesterday, after a workplace accident in 1993. The initial sum was €100,997 but the court of appeal raised that to €125,676 after stating that the calculation of compensation was based on a 15-year span instead of 20.

In the wake of the discovery that a court appointed psychiatrist had been dead several years, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said that members of the judiciary had absolute discretion in the choice of court experts during their cases. The government's only involvement is to foot the bill.
