In the Press: Former minister calls for legalization of medical marijuana

Former Minister of Health Godfrey Farrugia yesterday called for the legalization of the personal use of cannabis and similar synthetic drugs for medical purposes. He said that there is strong evidence that the drug can alleviate the side effects of cancer therapy, ease neuropathic pain and the symptoms of other chronic conditions.

The Opposition yesterday presented a Private Members Bill in parliament that aims to tackle the growing obesity problem. PN MP Robert Cutajar explained that the bill seeks to establish inter-ministry cooperation and a lifelong education in the importance of healthy eating and exercise, across all ages.

Six religious organizations have voiced concern over the growing support for far-right politics, as evidenced in the MEP elections. They said that such political ideologies promote hate against the weakest members of society.

The government has denied that the AFM abandoned migrants at sea, explaining that while attending to the individuals aboard one vessel, another distress call came in. The passengers aboard the first vessel were deemed to be safe so the crew left them water and lifejackets while a merchant vessel assisted them. The distress call involved 128 migrants who were said to be drowning.
