The Nationalist party has welcomed the parliamentary vote earlier this week which regulates the profession of youth workers.

In a statement issued today, the PN’s spokesperson for youth and sports, Robert Cutajar said that the vote – which was unanimously passed through parliament - marks an important step in the sector.

“The recognition of this law is a significant step,” he said, “Any work that is related to the development of youngsters can now be made professional and specialised.”

Cutajar said that the law, which he said was first proposed by the PN government, also ensured that the profession’s board representation will now be made up of non-governmental members, as well as others appointed by government. Previously, the seven board members were chosen by the minister in charge of education and employment. This number has now been reduced to four, with the other three deriving from youth-centred NGOs. “This should hopefully encourage more involvement from non-governmental groups.”

“The Nationalist party believes that youngsters should be active participants in the political path of our country, and not mere spectators,” he said.
