A report from the NSO shows that women are gaining ground in the employment sector, taking up twice as many job vacancies as men over the past year. Tax incentives and free child care may have contributed to this uptick. The total number of people in employment is 173,360 while those unemployed and looking for work rose by 249 to 11,255.

Environmental NGO Din l-Art Helwa has called the government's Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development for the next six years a flawed plan which sets environmental protection several years back. It also accused the government of using the plan to bypass Parliament on important decisions such as land use and the delineation of development zones.

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca said yesterday that applicants for financial support from the Community Chest Fund should be assessed, to determine the root of the problem rather than simply addressing the symptoms. On a radio interview, the President said that behind requests for basic items could lurk issues of unemployment, abuse or mental health problems.

A finalized party financing bill is expected to be made public soon, according to this newspaper's source within the justice ministry. The two parties are thought to share similar ideas on the regularization of party financing and this may result in the bill being made law more quickly.

A white paper released last February proposed that donations under €500 could be made anonymously while donations between €500 and €10,000 have to be included in the annual statement of accounts. The maximum donation is capped at €40,000.
