The NSO has opened a new branch in Gozo. It was inaugurated by Minister for Finance Edward Scicluna and Minister for Gozo Anton Refalo. Bishop of Gozo Mario Grech blessed the premises.

Prof. Albert Leone Ganado, Chairman of the Malta Statistics Authority, and Michael Pace Ross, Director General of the National Statistics Office, delivered introductory speeches.

Describing the opening as a “big satisfaction”, Refalo said that statistical research was necessary for the region of Gozo. “Having figures based on research for Gozo can help determine what the island needs and how we can improve the general standard of living.”

Meanwhile, Finance minister Edward Scicluna – also present for the event – said that, contrary to what the European Union seemed to believe, small islands such as Gozo required separate attention.

“There are certain differences between Malta and Gozo, especially with regard to education and job opportunities,” he said. “These small islands are very significant and require research on them. However, we cannot base our research on studies which have not officially been carried out as yet.”

The NSO branch is located in Victoria, Gozo, and currently employs 6 people.
