Three separate incidents required the intervention of lifeguards in the Blue Lagoon in Comino this weekend, said the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps.

Last Friday, at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, lifeguards assisted two swimmers who suffered from spinal injuries after jumping. The first accident, which happened at around 15:00, involved a woman who suffered back pain after jumping from a rock near Cominotto, known as ‘il-gwardja’.

The second accident happened at around 17:00, involving a man who jumped off Cominotto. In both cases, ERRC lifeguards gave the swimmers first aid before transporting the swimmers to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo with the hydro ambulance Lifesaver 1. An ambulance was called there to transfer them to the Gozo General Hospital for further treatment.

On Sunday, another spinal injury was reported in Comino. This time involving a 23-year-old Maltese man who was treated for spinal injury after jumping off Comino.

Just last month Malta Tourism Authority chairman Gavin Gulia pledged to make Cominotto off-limits as swimmers, many of them tourists, jump off the small island and risk injuring themselves.

In another incident, lifeguards also assisted a paddle boat that had difficulty returning ashore to Ramla Bay in Gozo.
