The Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Chris Fearne, believes that the quality of food served at the canteen of Mater Dei Hospital, as well as the overall level of catering, could be improved.

This morning, Fearne made an unannounced visit to Mater Dei after becoming concerned at the number of complaints made with regard to the poor level of food quality, service and hygiene in state-run institutions.

Only last month, Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly, Justyne Caruana was left shocked at the “appalling state” of the kitchen at St Vincent de Paule’s residence.

And during this morning’s visit, Fearne spoke to a number of patients who told him that the levels were improving. However, he later posted a tweet on Twitter saying that they “will be looking to do better”.

On her part, Caruana also made a surprise visit to an elderly home in Msida but was left disappointed with a number of shortcomings. She later announced that she would be setting up a new mechanism to better deal with the several complaints made on the conditions of such homes. However, the specific details on this new mechanism have yet to be announced.
