The Malta Community Chest Fund is set to become a foundation in a reform announced by President Coleiro Preca. The reform will allow the charitable entitiy to contribute to medical research as well as improve accountability and transparency in the charity, which collects about €3 million in donations every year.

Up to 70 migrant children were among the hundreds of victims of the deliberate sinking of a vessel 300 miles away from Malta. The migrants' boat was damaged by smugglers, causing it to sink and claim hundreds of lives. Some remained afloat for several days before drowning in rough seas.
