The Queen will be planning a major visit to Malta next year to attend a meeting of Commonwealth leaders for the first time since 2011.

According to the Daily Mail, the historic trip is being mooted for next November and the sovereign, who will be 89, is expected to bring her three heirs including toddler Prince George.

But Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said Malta is still waiting confirmation for the visit.

Speaking during the whirlwind trip to Malta by Prince William on the weekened of Malta's 50-year Independence celebrations, Muscat was reported to have said that the Queen was ‘very keen’ to make the visit happen. "I believe Her Majesty will attend, we are awaiting confirmation."

"I spoke to her in Glasgow at the opening of the Commonwealth Games and she said she was looking forward to coming over... we’d like to have all the family here."

In 2013, Prince Charles represented his mother at the biannual Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka, after the Queen decided to scale back on long-haul travel.

The success of the trip led to expectations that Charles would represent the Queen more often at such large-scale events.

But after aides apparently convinced her that the three-hour journey to Malta is ‘just like an internal flight’, the Queen is planning to re-take the reins.

It would be the first time a British monarch and three heirs - which in this case will be Charles, William and George - have travelled abroad together.

The Queen has something of a soft spot for the Mediterranean island where she and Prince Philip lived for several months during the early days of their marriage.
