Hunters can expect tighter restrictions once the season opens again on 10 October as a result of their protest in Valletta last Sunday. An OPM spokesman said the suspension would not be extended past that date however it should serve as motivation for law-abiding hunters to report criminal activity.

An entomologist confirmed that the aggressive insect was first brought to Malta by accident by sea and has since made nests in various localities. The wasps are larger than usual and especially irritable, with a very painful sting that could be deadly to those who suffer an allergic reacetion.

The Malta Union of Teachers has called for more transparency in police investigations dealing with reports of adults abusing children they work with. Education minister Evarist Bartolo said that society tends to presume the adult is guilty immediately, potentially damaging the reputations of innocent individuals.
