Grandparents’ Day was celebrated in Gozo on Sunday through an activity organized by voluntary organisation Nanniet Malta. This is the first anniversary of Grandparents’ day after a parliamentary motion for its creation was approved by both sides of the house.

The aim of Grandparents’ Day is to increase public awareness about the respect and recognition that old people deserve. It also aims to enhance solidarity between generations.

“Living a long life is always thanks to God, particularly if you manage to maintain your health,” Gozo Minister Anton Refalo said, adding that MEPA had approved the application to convert part of the St Joseph Home youth hostel in Ghajnsielem into an old people’s home.
“Grandparents play an important and valuable role in society,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Justyne Caruana said. “They often take care of their grandchildren when their parents will be at work. By helping their children raise their own children, grandparents are often second-time parents.”
