Deadly Gozo tragedy remembered on 66th anniversary

Gozo minister, victims’ relatives lead ceremony to remember tragedy at sea that claimed the lives of 24 people in 1948

Flowers were laid at sea today by Gozo minister Anton Refalo and other dignitaries to mark the 66th anniversary since 24 people lost their lives when a luzzu capsized on October 30, 1948.

The luzzu had capsized in Hondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo after it had disembarked from Marfa in stormy weather and rough seas.

Only four people on board the luzzu had survived, while the dead included two policeman, a woman, and two crew officials.

Mass was delivered on the MV Gaudos ferry this morning before the Gozo minister, and relatives of the victims threw flowers at sea.

Also present for the ceremony were Labour MP Franco Mercieca, UNESCO ambassador Mons Joe Vell Gauci, and former Speaker Anton Tabone, amongst others.
