Malta can brace itself for some frost as temperatures fall to their lowest ever in December for some 26 years.

According to maltaweathersite.com, an area of instability extending from the Aegean Sea to Libya is moving slowly eastwards and the weather is expected to be partly to rather cloudy with isolated rain showers that may be with hail at times, and with strong Force 6 north-northwesterly winds. A high of 8°C is also possible.

The outlook for the night will be rain showers that may be heavy, thundery or with hail, and with strong Force 6 north-northwesterly winds veering north-northeasterly and increasing to a strong Force 8. Low of 5°C.

Italian meteorologists are expecting snow in Sicily, as a robust anticyclone from the Atlantic towards Scandinavia sends the cold wind and frosty air down to the continent.

As the cold weather blats through central Europe, it will be the warmer North African climes that will stop its passage.

Temperatures are at -20 in the Alpine regions and expected to be as low as -4 down in the south of Europe.
