MHRA presents report on national tourism strategy

Tourism minister Edward Zammit Lewis called on all stakeholders to cooperate in creating opportunities for sector growth

Minister of tourism Edward Zammit Lewis met with the Council of the Maltese Association of Hoteliers and Restaurants (MHRA), in which it presented a report on the National Strategy for Tourism.

The meeting took place at the db Seabank Resort, which has just launched its new entertainment complex.

Zammit Lewis explained that the policy rests on three main pillars - accessibility, the generation of touristic demand through marketing activities and constant improvement of the touristic product through development and initiatives of quality assurance, both in Malta and Gozo.

The MHRA had been involved in the drafting of the policy from the start and, as one of the biggest non-governmental contributors, also participated in the public consultation sessions for the policy.

“This document is a long-term plan and will lead to 2030. This vision should spur all stakeholders to work together and to take initiatives that will lead to success and growth of this industry,” said Zammit Lewis.

“The government is committed to continuing to improve the sector, to foster wealth and increase the country's economy.”

The year started positively for the tourism industry. The NSO registered a record number of tourists visiting the islands in January, with over 74,000 visitors, an increase of 7% over last year.

The minister also welcome the appointment of Tony Zahra as president of the MHRA, wishing him success in his new role.
