Zero waste, traffic free town centres, natural parks: AD outlines vision for Gozo

Alternattiva Demokratika candidates pledge waste managment plan, development of water parks, and traffic free town centres

Alternattiva Demokratika candidates for the upcoming local council elections have this morning pledged that they would work towards a local waste management plan, the development of water parks, and the alleviating of traffic in town centres.

Presenting the party’s candidates for Gozo – David Camilleri and Toni Falzon, the party’s candidates for Qala and Nadur respectively – Greens’ chairperson Arnold Cassola explained that AD fully supports the national strategy plan of Gozo as a tourist destination which aims at reaching a zero waste society.

“We will work within this framework for a local waste management plan adapted to each locality that identifies the best way to implement the National Strategy in Qala and Nadur, including a pilot project for the recycling of organic and food waste,” he said.

Cassola also explained that the party’s candidates in Qala and Nadur would work towards transparency and accountability in the governance of Gozitan affairs.

On his part, David Camilleri, AD’s candidate for Qala pledged that the party will encourage the Nadur and Qala local councils to cooperate with Transport Malta to reduce traffic flows in the village core, thereby diminishing air and noise pollution.

Camilleri also said that the party would work in Qala and Nadur for the development of sea water parks in the abandoned Hondoq ir-Rummien quarry in Qala and in Ramla l-Hamra in Nadur

"We propose to work together in our councils with the national authorities to create Nature Parks in the publicly owned lands in Qala and Nadur. These parks would be a managed and protected environment of indigenous and endemic trees and plants to safeguard their future survival on Gozo,” he said.

“We will encourage our councils to monitor any illegalities happening within the confines of our local council using unobtrusive methods whilst we ensure that adequate local waste and recycling facilities are available and properly maintained, especially during the peak holiday period,” Camilleri continued.
