Muscat reacts to PN’s challenge: ‘Police free to investigate as they deem fit’

In Nadur, the Labour leader says his government has ‘nothing to hide’

Labour leader Joseph Muscat reacted to a challenge by the PN over the Gozo free construction works by saying that the police were “free to investigate as they deem fit”.

“We have nothing to hide and the police are free to investigate whatever they want. We have nothing to fear,” Muscat told Gozitans gathered in Nadur for a political activity organised by the Labour Party.

Muscat was reacting to a ‘challenge’ posed by the PN this morning when during a press conference it suggested that public resources were being provided to carry out private works today. The PN called on the police to extend its investigations into the Gozo free construction work beyond 9 March.

The political activity was also addressed by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo, who however made no reference to the case despite statements by the PN that the minister had been approached by the whistleblower a year ago.

According to the PN, the government was using the case to gain political points as the country was edging closer to the local councils election.

Hitting back, Muscat this evening said the PN had nothing to complain about: “Chris Said and Simon Busuttil had been approached by the whistleblower at  least a year ago but they didn’t take any action. Why?” Muscat said, claiming that the PN’s secretary general was now “feeling the pressure”.

“If you knew why didn’t you report it? Why didn’t you go to the authorities after someone told you that work was carried out in private places in return for votes?” he said.
