MUMN protests about 'unconsented' deductions in salaries

The MUMN has issued a statement to protest against the unconsented deduction in members' pays

The Malta Union of Midwives & Nurses has issued a statement to express that it couldn’t tolerate the fact that the Health Department was authorising deductions in salaries without the consent of its members.

“The department makes the same mistake of overpaying its employees every time,” the statement reads adding that the treasury office in Valletta, as also an accomplice to this.

According to the MUMN, the last case occurred this week when a single mother raising a seven month old baby was overpaid by the Health Department with the amount of €1,215.

“The woman, a nurse, asked for a breakdown since she was not convinced that this amount was correct while the department on the other hand, objected to handing a breakdown, and instead did not give the nurse a salary, leaving her literally stranded with her seven month baby to take care of.”

The MUMN said that this was not the first case of its kind, and it had led the MUMN to seek legal advice, who in turn sent a letter to the Permanent Secretary at the Health Department.

“The MUMN will not accept the fact that the Treasury Office in Valletta will continue to shift the Health Department's mistakes onto our members,” the statement said. “The situation is made more grevious when deductions are occurring without our members’ consent.”

MUMN has announced that it is ready to meet the finance and health ministries in order to discuss and find an acceptable solution for this scenario.

“On the other hand if another member complains due to a similar situation, MUMN will not have any other option but to register an industrial dispute with the Health Department.”
