MEA calls for Vince Farrugia's resignation from EU economic forum

Farrugia appeared before a court last Friday, where Magistrate Aaron Bugeja declared there was enough prima facie evidence for Farrugia to be charged with perjury and with inciting witnesses to do the same in a case against Sandro Chetcuti.

The employers' association and members of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development have called for the immediate resignation of Vince Farrugia as Malta's representative in Brussels, according to the l-Orizzont newspaper.

The former director-general of the GRTU appeared before a court last Friday, where Magistrate Aaron Bugeja declared there was enough evidence for Farrugia to be charged with perjury and with inciting witnesses to do the same in a case against Sandro Chetcuti.

Chetcuti, formerly a GRTU vice-president and now president of the Malta Developers Association, was first accused of the attempted murder of Farrugia when he assaulted him in his office during a heated argument.

The charges were later down-graded to grievous bodily harm as it emerged that Farrugia had pressured witnesses into corroborating his story.

Farrugia retained his position on the European Economic and Social Committee, a position the Malta Employers' Association and MCESD feel he should give up in light of recent court proceedings.

Farrugia's initial appointment, under the previous administration, was considered a political move and came under fire from the MEA.
