In the Press: Debono pushed to 'inevitable' resignation by PN

Former minister Giovanna Debono resigned from the PN on Tuesday, in the wake of her husband's corruption charges, only after being pushed by the Nationalist party but, according to sources, she had realized it was the inevitable decision. Her resignation prompted party leader Simon Busuttil to name Chris Said as shadow minister for Gozo. Said will give up his post as Secretary General.

Prisoners at Corradino Correctional Facility have claimed severe discrimination based on political affiliation. Speaking to this newspaper, inmates said the granting of permission to work outside the prison is dependent on politics and some have claimed they suffered physical abuse at the hands of guards.

This newspaper claims that four protected trees within the Ghajn Tuffieha Natura 2000 reserve were cut down. Two Aleppo Pines and two Sandarac Gum trees were removed from the site, for no discernable reason.

Following Chris Said's appointment as shadow minister for Gozo, speculation is rife as to who is to take his place as Secretary General. The PN AGM will be held at the end of the month, with David Agius, Jean-Pierre Debono, David Casa, Ann Fenech, Claudio Grech and Adrian Delia so far being mentioned as potential candidates.
