Recent power cuts have been due to cable faults and are not the result of generation capacity issues, Enemalta has said. Tempers flared as the temperature climbed higher this week and it is expected to persist. An all-time national record was reached last Wednesday, as a peak load of 438 megawatts was reached.

This newspaper reports that further details have emerged that shed doubt on the authenticity of the contract between minister Chris Cardona and the owner of a Portomaso flat he is staying in. The contract outlines the rental of a 1-bedroom apartment, while neighbours in the Portomaso building have confirmed that all units adjacent to the apartment in question have two bedrooms.

GWU Secretary General Tony Zarb expressed hopes that a collective agreement for public transport employees was not far off. Zarb was addressing the biennial conference of the maritime and aviation divisions of the GWU.

Two Italian men have been arrested in the Dominican Republic in connection with a diesel smuggling operation between Libya, Malta and Italy. Last December, fuel destined for a naval base in Sicily never reached its destination. Six other Italians were arrested in connection with the case.
