UHM in meetings with Air Malta over airline restructuring
The Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) today had a “preliminary” meeting with the Finance Minister Tonio Fenech on the Air Malta restructuring process.
Amongst others, present for this meeting were also Air Malta Chairman Sonny Portelli and representatives from Ernst & Young, the company tasked with drawing up the restructuring plan.
The UHM’s delegation for this meeting was composed of secretary general Gejtu Vella and union president Gaetano Tanti.
Describing the meeting as a “preliminary one”, the union said in a statement that it expects that similar meetings will be held all throughout the process. The union added that it represents a “substantial” number of workers “in various grades and categories within Air Malta.”
The union also said that it represents a substantial number of Air Malta workers, wants to “ensure that the interests of all workers are safeguarded.”
The Union said it will be insisting on being consulted particularly in the light that Air Malta is a company of strategic importance that could have an impact on a national scale.
“Air Malta is crucial for the tourism sector as well as the entire Maltese economy,” the UHM said.
Contacted earlier for a comment, UHM General Secretary Gejtu Vella said the union would not be taking a lead role because it did not have official recognition in Air Malta, but wished to be involved in view of the importance of the airline for the economy.
