Corradino Road in Paola has been renamed Dom Mintoff Road while the adjoining Gaddafi Garden has been renamed Mediterranean Garden.

In a statement, the government said that Corradino Road had been picked to honour the late Labour prime minister because it links up to Sir Paul Boffa Avenue – Sir Paul having been Mintoff's predecessor at the helm of the Labour Party before being ousted by Mintoff in a split that saw Boffa leaving to head the Malta Workers Party.

The government said that Corradino Road also links up with 28 April 1958 Road, which commemorates the workers’ strike ordered by the General Workers Union against the British colonial government.

The government said the 1958 riots were the start of “Malta’s road to Freedom Day”, the day which marks the last of the British forces in Malta after the country became first independent in 1964, and then a republic in 1974

The government said Gaddafi Gardens, set up during the Mintoff administration when the prime minister had close ties with Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, had now been renamed Mediterranean Garden.

The space in and around the new Parliament Building in Valletta will be named Freedom Square, the same name given to the square before the parliament was built.
