Malta Association Of Social Workers emphasizes need for tougher measures to deal with domestic violence after the publication of the annual Survey of Crime for 2015

The Malta Association Of Social Workers (MASW) has emphasized the need for tougher measures to deal with domestic violence.

The association was reacting to the publication of the annual crimemalta.com Survey of Crime for 2015.

Noting the “worrying figures,” the MASW said that it was “alarmed to note that reported cases of domestic violence are on the increase.”

“Victims of domestic violence often go through terrible ordeals when experiencing violence from the persons closest to them and from whom the greatest love is expected and then, when they finally find the courage to report the abuse they suffer, they face an uphill legal battle in an attempt to prove that they are victims,” a statement by the association reads.

The MASW also said that it believes that social workers in the field ought to be provided with better safeguards and protection to carry out their duties in supporting and encouraging victims of abuse to come forward or remain safe.

Calling for an increased sense of collaboration and communication with the Malta Police force in its crucial role in supporting victims, the MASW also thanked all the social workers who at times even put their own life at risk through the delicate nature of their profession to help the most vulnerable.
