The Nationalist Party has called for the Sette Giugno monument to be relocated from the Lower Hastings Garden to the entrance of Valletta, right outside the Parliament building.

“If the monument’s history is to be respected, then it must be sited right next to the country’s highest institution,” Opposition MP and culture spokesperson Karl Gouder said in a statement.

The government last month launched a public consultation session on the relocation of the Sette Giugno monument – that commemorates the 1919 riots, when four Maltese protestors against economic depression were shot dead by British troops in Valletta.

The monument, the work of the late artist Anton Agius, was originally sited in St George’s Square, but was temporarily moved to Lower Hastings in 2010 following the rehabilitation of the square.
