Government calls for urgent MCESD meeting to discuss gas and fuel prices

Responding to calls by unions and business representatives, government has called for an urgent meeting of the Malta Council of Economic and Social Development to discuss the upward hikes in gas and fuel prices.

The meeting is scheduled for Friday 7 January 2011.

In its statement announcing the urgent meeting, the government said that similar calls were made by the Unions Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) and the General Workers Union (GWU) earlier that same day.

The unprecedented price hikes in gas and fuel that came in quick succession provoked unions and business representatives to call on government to take action to cushion the burdens these price hikes would place on both families and businesses.

While unions lamented how the €1.16 cost of living adjustment was all but rendered ineffectual by the price hikes, the Labour Party announced that it is calling a national gathering for 14 January to protest the price hikes.

And then gonzi tell us how well the country is doing, and how good the government handled the resection and that there was no need for austerity measures like other countries, what the hell are these then? For him and his mates these are peanuts because he got 600eur a week, for us 1.16euro, he knows what he should have done with it.
