The wife of a Nationalist MP has gone public with her husband’s alleged affair, claiming on Facebook that Jason Azzopardi had been cheating on her with his “lover”.

Marica Azzopardi Balzan, who has been married to the MP for 18 years, took to Facebook to express her gratitude with those who let her know that her husband had spent the weekend in London, allegedly with another woman.

Azzopardi is denying cheating on his wife, adding that the couple are undergoing separation proceedings.

Allegedly, Azzopardi Balzan learnt of the affair after a final boarding call for passengers at the airport showed that Azzopardi and a woman had a flight to catch to London.

“Thank you for telling me the truth about my cheating husband,” Marica Azzopardi Balzan wrote. “Thanks for telling me that you saw my husband at the airport and that the PA was announcing last call for Jason Azzopardi and [name withheld].”

Identifying her husband as “Dr Jason Azzopardi MP”, Azzopardi Balzan said that her husband had left their matrimonial home on Saturday, telling her that today he would be travelling to London to see his dying uncle.

“But in fact he went for a holiday with his lover,” she claimed.

The allegations have been denied by the MP.

Contacted by MaltaToday for a comment following the public post, Azzopardi denied the claims but wished not to comment further.

“I have always said and believed that personal issues should remain personal,” he said. “But I can tell you that all that was written in that post is not true.”

Azzopardi said that he and his wife had been undergoing separation proceedings for months but insisted he could not – and would not – comment on his wife’s post.

Azzopardi, an MP elected on behalf of the Maltese Christian democratic party since 1998, was among the batch of MPs who in 2011 voted against the Divorce Bill despite the electorate’s “Yes” in a referendum.
