Alternattiva Demokratika has expressed its satisfaction at the fact that Parliament is set to “vote into law” amendments that will make the Marriage Act "applicable to all different kinds of family”.

The green party said this would be made possible “with the support of the parliamentary groups of the PL and the PN”.

Parliament yesterday started the Bill’s second reading, with the Opposition clearly stating that it intended to vote in favour, while also proposing some changes to the law.

"The speeches in the Parliament of Mario Demarco and Karl Gouder from the Opposition showed respect for the diversity in our society, a diversity which enriches us all” Luke Caruana, the green party’s spokesperson, said.

He said, however, that PN whip David Agius’ speech was one based on prejudices and misinformation.

“David Agius's speech played to the prejudiced of those who see diversity and respect as some kind of threat,” Caruana said.

He added that it was important for the country’s democracy that those voting for a law did so with conviction.

“It seems that some will only vote for this law for appearances sake, when in fact, they are prejudiced and cannot accept that the state treats all its citizens as equals,” he concluded.
