Thousands converged on Valletta this morning as they took part in the President’s Solidarity Fun Run, a charity event in aid of the Community Chest Fund.

The event started at 10am, with those participating having had the option of either jogging 11.3km from Rabat to Valletta, or walking 5.35km from Paola, 4.50km from Sta Venera or 4.70km from Tal-Qroqq to the capital.

Addressing the crowds in Valletta, both Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition leader Adrian Delia praised the generosity of the Maltese people, as they showed their appreciation to all those taking part in the fun run.

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca also thanked all participants, and said it was a positive thing that people could unite for such a good cause.

She appealed for people to be generous every day by showing respect to one another.

Even in cases of disagreement, respect had to be shown, she emphasised, and if people could show unity for the fun run, they could do it all the time.

The President had said earlier this week that the annual event's main aims were to promote healthiers lifestyles, and to serve as a way the people could unite towards something good.
