The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said that Syrian government war planes - backed by Russia - have launched dozens of air strikes on rebel-held areas in and around Aleppo.

The group adds that the government has also used helicopters to drop barrel bombs on the city, and rescue workers have reported that at least 20 bodies had been pulled from the rubble in several locations.

Syrian state media have meanwhile reported that government-held areas were hit by rebel missiles, and that several casualties had been reported.

Aleppo has been divided between rebel groups and government forces for years, and it has seen deadly bombardments despite a ceasefire that was agreed in February.
