Trump dismisses UN as ‘just a club for people to have a good time’

United Nations 'just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time', Donald Trump claims in his latest controversial tweet

US President-elect Donald Trump has tweeted that the United Nations is “just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time”.

His criticism against the global body of nations comes three days after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution that called on Israel to halt its construction of settlements in the Palestinian Territory, that only passed after the United States uncharacteristically abstained.

“The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!” Trump tweeted while on vacation at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

While Trump didn’t elaborate on his latest criticism of the UN, he had made it clear before and after the Security Council’s vote that the US should have vetoed the resolution. However, outgoing US President Barack Obama instructed UN ambassador Samantha Power to abstain from voting, on the grounds that the Israeli government’s continued support for expanding Jewish settlements on Palestinian land was undermining any prospect for a two-state solution to the ongoing conflict.

After the vote, Trump tweeted, “As to the UN, things will be different after Jan. 20th,” referring to the day he will assume the presidency.
