Wasteserv and ERA to develop landfill management policy in €14 million EU project

Waste management operator Wasteserv and the Environment and Resource Authority (ERA) will be participating in a European project aimed at improving regional policy on landfill management within the participating regions and countries.

With a total budget of €14 million, project COCOON, which falls under the Interreg Europe Programme, will see the two local entities receiving around €176,000 at a co-financing rate of 85%.

According to a statement by Wasteserv, the objective of this project is to develop, integrate and improve relevant policy instruments, while increasing subsidies through operational programmes for landfill management projects. It will bring together distinct EU regions to share and capitalise on regional good practices, Wasteserv said.

Eight partners from Cyprus, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Malta are participating in the project, which is being coordinated by Belgian entity I-Cleantech Flanders.

Wasteserv identified increased resource and land recovery as well as new opportunities for economic developments as benefits of landfill management projects.

“As a result of landfill management projects, the recovery of resources as well as land recovery is increased while future environmental hazards can be avoided. Moreover, landfill management projects generate economic development opportunities and create new green jobs, all within the context of an EU-wide transition to a resilient, low-carbon, circular economy,” Wasteserv said.

The project will run for five year, until February 2022.
