Man, convicted of Birkirkara break-ins, jailed for two years

27-year-old Dingli resident jailed for two years after robbing two shops

A Dingli man has been jailed for two years after admitting to breaking into and robbing two shops last July.

27-year-old Annise Bejaoui, who already has previous convictions for theft, had been arraigned before Magistrate Neville Camilleri in July and charged with breaking into two Birkirkara shops during the night of the 12 July.

Bejaoui had originally been charged with aggravated theft, several counts of voluntary damage, breaching two sets of previous bail conditions and relapsing; however the prosecution had withdrawn several charges as the case was being heard – including their request for the confiscation of his bail bond.

The man had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, but when these were modified earlier this month, Bejaoui had filed an admission to aggravated theft, voluntary damage on that same day.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli, after taking the accused's cooperation with police investigations into account, handed the Bejaoui a two-year prison sentence.

Inspectors John Spiteri and Luke Bonello prosecuted.
