Government spends some €23.77 per student every day

A student attending public school costs government an average of €23.77 on a daily basis.

For every student attending public schools at kindergarten, primary and secondary levels, government forks out an average of €23.77 for each day of the scholastic year.

Education Minister Dolores Cristina, who was answering to questions raised by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo, revealed the information in parliament yesterday evening.

Given that - according to the latest government statistics - last September public schools opened their doors to some 32,501 students at kindergarten, primary and secondary levels, government expenditure for the 2011-2012 scholastic year will therefore be of around €722,550.

In a separate statement, Cristina said the final document of the new National Curriculum is expected to be finalised after the third consultation phase is completed.

The third consultation phase starts next month and is expected to be completed by December. By March 2012, all recommended changes will be included in the new curriculum.

The new syllabi cover from Year 1 to Year 6 and Form 2 of the secondary level. They are expected to come into force by September 2012. The syllabus of Form 1 was implemented during this year’s scholastic period and will be refined according to suggestions following the national consultation.

Cristina added that syllabi covering Form 3, 4 and 5 are expected to be finalised by May 2012 and implemented the following September.
