Cassar promises nurses, midwives ‘commitment and support’
Health Minister Joe Cassar promises nurses and midwives he “will always be part of helping take the profession forward”
Addressing a conference for nurses and midwives organised by Mater Dei Hospital, Health Minister Joe Cassar reiterated his commitment and support towards the nursing and midwifery professions.
"My standing here today clearly captures how I feel towards nurses. I respect your profession and have and always will be part of taking your professions forward," Cassar said.
He said that nurses had the primary responsibility of securing optimal care for the patients: "This remains the cornerstone of our hospital."
As the health minister voiced his appreciation and gratitude for their work, Cassar also reminded the nurses that their patients were the reason why they entered the profession in the first place.
"I take this opportunity to refer you to why you all joined the profession, undoubtedly because you wanted to reach out and help the elderly, the frail ... the most vulnerable," he said.
"Always remember that it is the patient and his needs that drove you into this profession. It is the patient and nothing else that should be moving you forward in your profession."
Although the minister did not refer to the ongoing criticism raised by the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) - who tomorrow must decide whether to cancel or go ahead with a strike on Monday - Cassar however repeatedly insisted with the nurses that a lot of people depended on their work.
"Many depend on your role, your contribution. The patient must always be the priority that drives you in your work," Cassar said.
"Your responsibilities are many but I am sure your input is optimal ... I am here today to show you my commitment and support."
