In a statement issued this morning, Transport Malta announced that it had just opened the southbound carriageway on the Ta' Pennellu Bypass in Mellieha to vehicular traffic.

"The opening is intended to relieve the traffic pressure in the area by giving a faster route and hence a reduction in traveling time," TM said.

It added that the opening of the carriageway was timed to take place by mid-June when traffic volumes in the northern part of the island increase dramatically.

"The works on the bypass, which are partially funded by the EU, are expected to continue for the rest of the year," it said.

Transport Malta also encouraged motorists to make use of the diversion route and to avoid the Mellieha village core.
