Worker miraculously escapes quarry collapse
A worker escaped serious injury after tons of rubble suddenly collapsed into a quarry yesterday afternoon.
Reporting by Ian Fenech
51 year old Sammy Muscat jumped from an earth mover and ran for his life in a bid to avoid tonnes of tumbling debris as a six metre wide quarry face suddenly collapsed.
Muscat was trapped by rubble and is thought to have miraculously only suffered a fractured
leg.
Two fellow workers called alerted the Civil Protection, who worked hard to unearth the injured worker. He was placed into a bucket stretcher and hoisted to road level where he received further treatment by paramedics from a waiting ambulance crew.
The quarry, situated in an area known as tal-Bizbizija limits of Mgarr, belongs to contractors Carmel Vella Ltd.
The earth mover was completely destroyed in the incident.
