Maltese economy should be based on knowledge and innovation – John Dalli

European Commissioner John Dalli, who was addressing the General Workers’ Union’s National Council, said that for workers to be truly competitive they should continually be given training.

Dalli, a former finance minister, made it clear that Malta needs to go undergo more reforms. “Malta had undergone huge reforms in the ten years before becoming an EU member. However, it would be a mistake to think that these were enough,” Dalli said. Reforms are crucial for the Union to keep moving forward after the challenges which the international recession brought with it, the European Commissioner added.

John Dalli stressed on the importance of  innovation - “We must make use of all available technology, give importance to sustainable growth, improve the quality of people’s lives and the importance of women’s inclusion in the work force.”

In his speech, Dalli talked of his work in the European Commission as health commissioner, whilst saying that in Malta we have the tendency to see everything as a choice between yes and no. This was the first time that a European Commissioner addressed a trade union in Malta. Also addressing the meeting was GWU's Secretary General, Tony Zarb
