Boys from church schools get best O-level results

Boys from church schools are consistently obtaining higher grades compared to their peers in independent or state schools.

Male students from church schools are consistently obtaining higher grades compared to their peers in independent or state schools. But the difference in results between females from church schools and junior lyceums is less pronounced.

Matsec's statistical report for 2012 shows that females were significantly more likely to obtain Grade 1 than males in Computer Studies, English Language, English Literature, French, German, Maltese, Religious Knowledge and Social Studies. 

On the other hand there were more males than females who obtained a Grade 1 in Economics, Physical Education and Mathematics.

Statistics presented in the report shows that boys from church schools get their best results in mathematics, accounting for  39% of students obtaining a top grade in Mathematics. Boys from church schools also account for 27% of students obtaining a top grade in physics and 24% of students obtaining a top grade in English.  

On the other hand boys from junior lyceums account for only 1.6% of students obtaining a top grade in Mathematics and Physics, and just 0.6% of students obtaining a top grade in English.

But girls in junior lyceums tend to perform similarly to those in church schools.

Girls from junior lyceums accounted for 21% of top achievers in English while girls from church schools accounted for 23%.  

Girls from church schools accounted from 19% of top achievers in Mathematics while girls from state schools accounted for 14% in the same category.

Girls from both church schools and junior lyceums did better than boys in their Maltese examination. Girls from church schools accounted for 46% of Grade 1 passes in Maltese while girls in junior lyceums accounted for 19%. Boys from church schools accounted for 16% while none of the boys from government schools obtained a top grade in Maltese.

Students from independent schools gave their best in English where they accounted for 21% of top achievers but they accounted for only 7% of top achievers in Maltese.  They also account for 17% of top achievers in Mathematics.

Significantly 62% of top achievers in Mathematics hail from church schools while 21% hailed from state schools.
