GWU hits out at PM, 'former port workers ignored'

General Workers’ Union says Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has ignored the former port workers claim they have been denied their pensions.

Last February, the General Workers’ Union secretary-general Tony Zarb had presented the Prime Minister with a petition signed by over 500 former port employees who claimed they were not given their pensions from a fund they contributed to during their employment.

The petition called on Gonzi to call a meeting as soon as possible to find a solution to this problem: “But several weeks have passed since and the Prime Minister continues to ignore their call.”

The union said the Prime Minister’s attitude shows he “does not care about them” and the former employees are irked by this. “It goes on to show the Prime Minister is discriminating against them,” it said.

It said it has long been working to find a solution to this “injustice” where the former port workers were left out from the reform carried out for the port workers.

The union added the port workers had been instigated to leave the GWU, so those behind the action could do whatever they wanted and exclude the former port workers from the reform.
