Illegal abattoir with dreadful hygiene conditions found in Blata l-Bajda

A 70-year old man from Hamrun is being accused of animal cruelty following the finding of an illegal abattoir in Blata l-Bajda, reportedly lacking the most basic necessary hygiene.

Gianni Bajada had been under observation by officials from the Animal Welfare Department for two weeks, after suspicions arose that an abattoir was operating illegally, l-Orizzont reports today.

Bajada was confronted by officials at around 5.00 am yesterday morning. He told them part of the location is a mechanic’s garage, while another area is used by himself for carpentry works. Officials insisted for inspection of the whole area.

The abattoir was discovered at the back of the building, adjacent to a farmhouse, where Bajada claimed was used as a “workshop”.

Nine tanks of pig remains were discovered along with four freezers containing frozen meat and internal organs. The meat was being prepared for selling and consumption, part of which was being made into sausages.

Various tools were found at the abattoir, namely knives and large hooks for hanging the carcasses. Another freezer was found containing numerous large hooks where Bajada allegedly used to kill and butcher animals.

Officials also discovered around 50 sheep, many without the necessary ear stamp suggesting they are not registered by the Veterinary Director. Around 20 kids and a large number of chickens and ducks were also found on site.

The illegal abattoir lacked the most basic hygiene, L-Orizzont reports, where sheep remains, fresh pieces of meat and blood were found lying around on the butchering table.

Officials from the Health Division, led by Dr. Duncan Borg, went on site, together with district police led by Inspector Anthony Cauchi.

Bajada and possibly other people involved in the case are expected to be taken to Court.
