The Institute of Maltese Journalists has condemned this morning’s incident where a man forcefully pushed the editor of ONE News, along with a reporter.
The incident was caught on camera and a man could be seen launching himself against ONE news editor Aleander Balzan, right in front of the leader of the opposition. Party officials could be seen stopping reporters from asking questions to the opposition leader as he attempted to enter the law courts.
Others moved in to pull the aggressive man away.
The IGM expressed its serious concerns over the recent developments, especially during political activities. Altercations between members of the media and politicians or party supporters are becoming more frequent.
“Hindering journalists from carrying out their duty is unacceptable and members of the media should be given the necessary protection.”
The IGM went on to add that it was discussing a proposal that should address this unacceptable situation. It noted, that such attitude could be mostly noticed during activities organized by political parties.
