Malta marks Republic Day

Malta has marked Republic Day with a formal ceremony at the Palace in Valletta led by President George Abela.

Republic Day, established on December 13, 1974, is marked every year as Republic Day (Jum ir-Repubblika) in Malta. The monument of Republic Day is at Marsa.

Official celebrations started with a parade held by the Armed Forces of Malta that makes its way down Republic Street in Valletta – past the Courts - all the way St George’s Square, where the rest of parade is held.

Following the parade, an investiture and medal-giving ceremony took place at the Grand Council Chamber at the Palace in Valletta.

Wreaths were placed by the National Festivities Committee on burial places of former presidents in Addolorata Cemetery such as Sir Anthony Mamo, and recently deceased Guido de Marco.

Wreaths were also placed on monuments dedicated to heads of state instrumental to Malta’s development as a sovereign democratic republic such - as that dedicated to Agatha Barbara in Zabbar, and Dr Anton Buttigieg’s monument in Blata l-Bajda.
