A petition has been launched by a group of Labour Party stalwarts in an effort to compel Joseph Muscat to stay on as Prime Minister.

The petition, titled Joseph, Malta bzonnok (Joseph, Malta needs you) has been presented by a group called Interess ta' Malta (Malta's Interest), led by former General Workers' Union boss Tony Zarb, ex-President of the Labour Party Emanuel Cuschieri and Labour's Gozo factotum Guza Cassar.

"We believe the majority believe in Joseph Muscat's capabilities and we therefore feel that we need to unite so that he continues leading the country on the right path," they said at a press conference.

The organisers hope they can present the petition to Muscat in the shortest possible time.

Muscat has continued to dispel the possibility of running for another term and that two terms as Prime Minister are enough. He is yet to declare when he is to step down however.
