27 soldiers killed by Syrian army deserters

At least 27 soldiers and security force personnel were killed by Syrian army deserters in a series of clashes in the southern province of Deraa.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said army deserters - loyal to President Bashar al-Assad - in Syria opened fire and killed at least 27 soldiers and other personnel.

The attacks took place in the two separate locations in Deraa and at a checkpoint about 15 miles to the east of they city. All 15 personnel at a joint army and security checkpoint were killed.

Reuters reports the high casualties among the forces suggests coordinated strikes by the army rebels.

The uprising in Syria has far left 5,000 people dead, according to the United Nations. 1,100 are soldiers and police.
