Bail for inflatable banana thrower

An inflatable banana has landed a Birkirkara FC supporter in court this morning on charges of causing scuffles and a pitch invasion, after he threw it at supporters of Hibernians during a match between the two clubs on Saturday.

Truck driver Terence Ciantar, 32, was arraigned under arrest and charged with unlawful assembly, inciting a group of people to commit an offence , inciting a mob to disobey the law, invading a football pitch, throwing an object inside a sports ground and breaching the peace, and behaving offensive or abusive manner.

Inspector Trevor Micallef explained to the court how the accused had provoked a disturbance in the ground when he threw a plastic inflatable banana at supporters of the opposing team. Violent clashes allegedly erupted around the stadium as a result.

Lawyers David Camilleri and Joseph Gatt, appearing for the accused, told the court that the incident had already started when the banana was thrown and in any case, was a small one. The prosecution did not object to a request for bail.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti granted Ciantar bail against a personal guarantee of  €2500, ordering him to sign a bail book once a week and prohibiting him from attending any sporting venue.
