Man with 35 convictions is jailed again

Charles Sciberras, 39, was caught stealing a car stereo red-handed

An unrepentant criminal with over 35 previous convictions was jailed for 18 months today after he was found guilty of attempting to steal a car stereo last July.

Charles Sciberras, 39, from Santa Luċija, had been arrested after the driver of a bus fortuitously drove past his own private vehicle, parked near the Marsa park and ride and witnessed the accused trying to detach the stereo from the dashboard.

The bus driver had brought his vehicle to a halt and walked up to his car, catching Sciberras red-handed, holding the stereo and a collection of CDs which had been in the vehicle. The police were called and Sciberras was arrested.

Sciberras was also accused of breaching the conditions imposed on him by previous courts, however he was cleared of this charge, the court holding that the required authenticated copy of the sentences had not been submitted.

Judging from the large number of previous convictions, Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera jailed the man, holding that the accused was persisting in his life of crime and showed no intention of changing his ways.
