33-year-old St Paul's Bay resident Uchena Anya, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to traffic drugs and to the importation of heroin

A court has remanded a Nigerian national in custody this morning after he was charged with having imported half a kilogram of heroin into the country last week.

33-year-old St Paul's Bay resident Uchena Anya, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras to charges of conspiracy to traffic drugs and to the importation of heroin in the days leading up to 17 September.

Police Inspector Gabriel Micallef also charged Anya with failing to comply with previous bail conditions imposed in a separate, pending, case for conspiracy to traffic cocaine in 2010

The man, who also holds a Maltese identity card, denied the charges.

Lawyers Giannella de Marco and Gianluca Caruana Curran, appearing on behalf of Anya, did not request bail.
